With the help of my friend Joe, a local guy thats worked on boats most of his life, we dug a 40 inch deep hole under the rudder.  With a little heat on the shoe (which holds the bottom of the rudder to the keel) the 3 brass bolts loosened easily.  Then "plop, plop, fizz, fizz" the rudder came down with an inch to spare, time for lunch.........
